BAJAN BOATS DOMINATE IN BEQUIA
Congratulations were in order for two local sailing teams which took part in the competitive J24 Class at this year’s Bequia Easter Regatta from April 22nd to 25th. When the dust settled, it was Sumtin’s Happ’nin skippered by Paul Johnson that took overall honours from Xpelair Fadeaway skippered by Charlie Gloumeau on a tie-breaker.
Both teams finished with a total of sixteen points from six races; however the title went to Sumtin’s Happ’nin by virtue of having more first place finishes.
Xpelair Fadeaway sailed extremely consistently to bring home some additional silverware when they secured the United Insurance trophy for winning the three-race series held as part of the event on Saturday April 23rd.
A total of nine teams from across the Caribbean entered the regatta with St. Lucia having the majority of teams with four. The lone entry from Grenada, Team Die Hard sponsored by Island Waterworld and skippered by Robert Yearwood secured third place with nineteen points.
This is the third consecutive year that a Barbadian team has won the regatta which also is designated as the Southern Caribbean J24 Championship. It was also a special victory in that this year marked the 30th anniversary of the regatta. Last year’s regatta was won by Williams Industries Hawkeye skippered by Robert Povey who was unfortunately unable to compete in this year’s event.
