Hawkeye

The year 2010 has been another successful one for Team Hawkeye. Owner/Helmsman Robert Povey and his core team of Derek Johnson (Foredeck), Eddie Cheeseman (Foredeck/Mast), Charlie Allen (Genoa/Jib Trim) and Kwame Hinds (Spin Trim) were able to defend their 2009 National Championship Title against strong challenges from Esperanza and new-comer Undercover Luva over the entire season. The team actually ended the season tied on points with Esperanza, but were awarded the overall title on the second tie-breaker.

The year started tremendously well with outstanding victories in the J24 Class at the 2010 Port Louis Grenada Sailing Festival and also the 2010 Bequia Easter Regatta; in which the team claimed the Southern Caribbean J24 Championship title from 15 other boats, as well as the honour to be officially recognised as the first ever Southern Caribbean J24 champions.

On the local scene, the performances were equally impressive with overall victory in the 2010 Barbados Fertility Clinic J24 series and strong second place finishes in the 2010 J24 International Open, the 2010 Supercenter J24 series and the 2010 Match Racing Championships.

Even though the number of outright victories may have decreased from 2009, Hawkeye was able to maintain consistent results at the top of the fleet which they are known for and retain the National title.

The gloves will definitely be coming off for the 2011 season as many teams will be chasing the National Title. They all should still be watchful of Team Hawkeye whose eyes are firmly set on the “three-peat”.

Team Hawkeye expressed special thanks to their key sponsors Peake Yacht Services and Williams Industries Inc.
